Ethics and privacy: why AI in education needs clear boundaries
AI is moving fast in education. Faster than policies, faster than governance, and sometimes faster than institutions can comfortably manage. And that is not just a tech issue, it is a risk issue. One data leak, one GDPR violation, one integrity scandal, and suddenly it is not about innovation anymore, but about liability, loss of trust and reputational damage.

And yes, AI has found its way into education too. Students are using it, apparently even during exams. Lecturers are experimenting with it. Researchers see new opportunities opening up.
At the same time, educational institutions are left with a growing list of questions. How do you use AI without leaking research data? How do you stay GDPR compliant? What happens to academic integrity and transparency? And above all, how do you stay in control as an institution without throwing your pedagogical values overboard?

Privacy

Educational data is not training material
What is often underestimated is that many public AI tools learn from their users. Every prompt helps make the system smarter. That means students and researchers are often unknowingly contributing to the training of commercial AI models. In an educational context, that is problematic.
