Since 2020, VTI Zeebrugge has fully embraced digital testing and examinations. In collaboration with Signpost and Academic Software, the school launched assessmentQ. Today, the platform is deeply embedded in daily classroom practice. Both teachers and students benefit from greater flexibility and reduced stress. The move from paper to digital has proven to be not only more efficient but also fairer.
From paper to digital: a well-considered leap
Before 2020, 97% of tests and exams were still conducted on paper. The transition to assessmentQ was made possible through a partnership with Signpost and Academic Software.
“Our initial introduction went very smoothly,” says ICT coordinator Andreas Eeckhout. “Several specialists supported us during the onboarding process, the Smartschool integration, and the teacher training. Now, I deliver annual in-school workshops on assessmentQ myself.”
Smarter assessment with more learning opportunities
assessmentQ is more than a digital alternative to paper-based testing. The platform offers features that improve assessment quality while reducing teacher workload. Teachers can prepare exams using a built-in question library and enrich them visually with images and graphs. Thanks to the Safe Exam Browser, all tests are conducted in a secure kiosk mode.
“Thanks to assessmentQ, I can ask more questions related to the same learning objectives,” says Andreas. “This gives students more opportunities to achieve their goals. What used to be unfeasible on paper is now possible because marking is faster, and students complete tests more quickly.”
Students feel more confident
The platform makes a big difference for students. Jarne, a final-year student in Automotive Mechanics, shares: "It’s well organised. You can highlight, return to questions later, and see how much time you have left. That helps reduce stress. And the images are clear and in colour – unlike blurry black-and-white photocopies."
Inclusivity also improves. For students with dyslexia or language difficulties, assessmentQ can be a game-changer. Thanks to text-to-speech software, clear formatting, and spellchecking, they no longer lose marks due to technical barriers.

“You don’t want to lose marks because of a spelling mistake when you knew the answer. assessmentQ takes that worry away."

Less admin, more impact
assessmentQ also proves easy to manage. According to the IT coordinator, the platform requires minimal technical expertise.
“Administration is straightforward, and teachers can use it independently. Only the group creation in September requires some effort. After that, everything runs smoothly.”
The feedback features also make a real difference. Students can review their marked tests and use them to prepare for future exams. This increases transparency and helps boost success rates.
A complete solution thanks to Signpost
The power of assessmentQ doesn’t stand alone. VTI Zeebrugge is part of the broader Signpost ecosystem. Laptops are protected by durable Shockcases and are repaired quickly and professionally by M4S with on-site service. Thanks to this collaboration, neither teachers nor students need to worry about downtime or data loss.
“It’s the combination of assessmentQ with Academic Software’s guidance, Signpost’s service, and M4S’s support that makes it all work for us.”
Recommended for other schools
VTI Zeebrugge wholeheartedly recommends assessmentQ and the support provided by Academic Software.
“Not every subject lends itself equally well to digital testing, but for many courses, it offers real added value – for both students and teachers.”

“Thanks to the collaboration with Signpost and Academic Software, we quickly evolved from paper-based exams to a smart digital approach. And it’s paying off: students perform better, evaluations are fairer, and teachers work more efficiently."
